Off-Roading with Fido
A full day on the 4×4 beach, with the dog. Eleven miles of sand with no pavement, no store and no shade — and a state park at the top of it that almost nobody walks.
The route
You drive north from the Corolla ramp onto the Currituck 4×4 beach and keep going to the Virginia line. Along the way: the wild horse herd, Colonial Spanish Mustangs and the state horse of North Carolina; Penny’s Hill, the largest live moving dune on the Outer Banks, which buried the village of Seagull — two churches, a one-room school and a post office that closed in 1924; the 1917 Wash Woods Coast Guard station, one of five that once stood on this beach; and Carova Beach Park on the sound side, where the water has no waves and a tired dog can stand up in it.
There is a beachcombing list you can work on anywhere along the way — a hoof print, a whelk egg case, something the sea brought back, and whatever your dog picks up before you can stop him.
At the top, the driving ends and you park. False Cape State Park has no road into it and never has, but you can walk in from the North Carolina side with a dog, and most days there is nobody on it. The hunt finishes back in Corolla village on a dog-friendly patio.
Built around the dog
Every stop is somewhere your dog is genuinely allowed — no leave-them-in-the-car moments. The briefing covers the things that actually matter out there: airing down before the ramp, the fifty-foot rule around the horses, hot sand and paws, and how often to get a dog off salt water. Start early. Heat is the one thing out here that decides how the day goes. Finish it and your dog is a Certified Sand Dog of Carova.
What you need
A four-wheel-drive vehicle — this beach is the road, and two-wheel drive does not make it off the ramp. In season the strand also needs a Currituck parking permit. Bring more water than you think, a bowl, a leash, and your own shade.
