The investigation
A flat loop of about a mile and a half, starting and ending at Silver Lake harbor, through the village’s historic markers, the British Cemetery, and Howard Street. You’ll read the actual signs, weigh the actual claims, and find out which Blackbeard legends hold up — and at a few stops, the honest answer is “not this one.” Every stop is outdoors and open to the public.
Getting to Ocracoke
There’s no bridge. In season, the passenger ferry from Hatteras lands right at Silver Lake, steps from the start; the free car ferry lands at the island’s north end, about a twenty-minute drive from the village. Check current schedules at ncdot.gov before you travel.
